Spring into Sustainable Living: Upcycling Ideas for Your Old Candle Jars

Welcome back to our recycling themed blog posts!

This time, we're exploring some ideas on refreshing your home for the brighter months of the year.

Time to Spring into action

We recently published a page on our commitment to fighting against climate change and trying to take action for the benefit of our planet. We do strongly believe that doing everything we can to preserve and care for the planet we live on should be a critical part in everyone's life. We will never stop looking for our own ways to improve this.

Spring is a great time to make a change, even if it's a small one like reusing your glass jar candles, it's the season of new growth after all.

So grab a lovely cup of tea, pop yourself out into the garden and have a read of our ideas for this edition of Recycling Inspiration!

 Houseplants!

Houseplants are fantastic, they add colour to your home, help freshen up the air you breathe and are relatively simple to look after.

You can plant anything you like, but the common indoor houseplants are succulents (plants like aloe vera, and cacti), or herbs.

We chose to turn one of our old used glass bowl candles into a lovely little terrarium, simply pop in some fine sand, decorative rocks and your choice of plant for a stylish and simple home decoration. For ours, we picked up a baby Aloe Vera plant.

You can of course use normal compost for these, especially things like herbs for the kitchen, or if you are particularly good at keeping plants you can even try hydroponics.

Some lovely daffodils

Daffodils look fantastic this time of year, and thankfully our large glass jars are the perfect place to put them!

Store, Declutter & Organise

Spring time doesn't always just mean flowers, freshly cut grass (this would make a good candle scent, don't you think?) and redecorating. For many households across the world springtime means spring cleaning.

Candle jars at the end of the day are just glass containers, so why not refill them with some of your household items?

Here we've put our home's supply of cotton buds and pads in a large jar, it serves the purpose perfectly and with matching lid it helps to keep them free of dust!

You can organise anything you like, so long as it fits in the jar of course. Not only do you help to recycling your glass jars, but you also get to neatly organise and display your belongings. Win win if you ask us.

Bird feeders

We don't often talk about what to do with the jar lids once you have turned the jar into something wonderful, so here's a nifty little idea.

With a bit of craft string and a place in the garden to hang it, you can turn our glass jar lids into simple bird feeders.

a simple bird feeder

We recommend the large glass jar for maximum space, just be aware that this feeder will also attract the squirrels too. We're personally ok with that though, the squirrels can be just as enjoyable to watch as the birds.

Bonus Idea: Tealight holders!

We talk a lot about how to recycling and reuse the candle jars, but have you ever sat and thought; "what about the lid?...."

Well lucky for you we thought that too, so here's a rather simple idea with plenty of potential! Turn your candle jar lids into tealight holders! Our Large jar Candles or Small jar Candles both come with their own lids, they're perfect for popping a tealight into!

Being made of glass means the light from your tealight is still able to fill your room, but if the plain glass aesthetic doesn't suit your taste you can always wrap the edge in a pretty ribbon or bow or style it however you like. Who doesn't like a little bit of craftwork every now and then?
